Leap
A MadMooze software product

Beta · in testing with real trips

Where are we going next, and when should we leave?

Leap is a local-first family travel planner. Add destinations, reservations and required arrival times; it computes the route, the buffers and the recommended leave time — then tells everyone when it is time to move.

Illustrative example, not live data.

A shared itinerary is not the same as knowing when to move.

Most travel apps store your plan. The hard part on the day is arithmetic: the walk to the station, the transfer you will miss, the reservation that cannot be moved, and six people who are not ready at the same time.

Leap turns the plan into a departure time. Trips break down into days, itinerary items and travel legs. Every leg carries its own buffers — arrival, station, transfer, taxi, luggage, family readiness, accessibility, uncertainty, and custom — so the leave time reflects your actual family, not an idealized traveller.

A deterministic engine, not a guess.

The leave-time engine is a pure, fully unit-tested package. The same trip always produces the same answer.

Fixed departures stay fixed

A Shinkansen or a flight is never silently moved to make a schedule work. The plan bends around it.

Buffers you control

Nine buffer types per leg, including family readiness and accessibility, so the estimate matches how your group actually travels.

Live countdown

The Today screen shows time remaining, schedule status and readiness at a glance.

Status is never colour alone

Badges carry words and the timeline carries times, so status survives colour blindness and bright sunlight.

Local notifications

Prepare, leave soon, leave now, route changed, fixed departure — replaced automatically whenever the plan changes.

Navigation handoff

One tap opens the current leg in Google Maps rather than reinventing turn-by-turn navigation.

Personal stops

One shared trip everyone sees, plus personal items each member adds on top, visible only to them.

Tested

845 tests across the engine, schemas and app at this revision, with strict TypeScript throughout.

Built to work in a foreign train station with no signal.

Offline is the default, not a degraded mode.

The complete itinerary lives in IndexedDB. Leap installs as a PWA, edits offline, falls back to manual travel estimates when routing is unavailable, and warns you when data is stale rather than presenting it as current.

Sign-in works offline too, from a cached password verifier — so nobody is locked out of their own schedule because the platform cannot reach a server.

Family sync without a cloud account.

Members sync through a home server over Tailscale — no cloud account, no public ports.

Each member gets their own login and accent colour. The server is never required to view the itinerary; it only reconciles changes between devices.

Translate

French, Spanish, German, Italian, Greek, Turkish and Japanese packs drive photo translation, typed translation, speech, and live interpreting.

Spain and Mexico share the neutral-Spanish pack.

Phrasebook, precached

Phrasebooks are precached independently of everything else, so they stay usable with no signal at all.

Provider keys stay in the proxy, never on a phone.

Convert money honestly

Conversions use a cached pair-specific European Central Bank rate, with the rate's age shown so stale data is never mistaken for live data. Optional card-fee markup.

Unknown pairs show no invented fallback.

How it works

1

Add

Destinations, reservations and required arrival times.

2

Tune

Set the buffers that match your group.

3

Compute

The engine derives routes and leave times.

4

Share

Everyone sees the trip; each adds personal stops.

5

Move

Notifications say when it is time to go.

No API key required, ever.

Mapping is provider-neutral. Google Places and Routes sit behind interfaces alongside a manual/offline provider.

Without keys, Leap runs entirely on manual estimates and Google Maps URL handoff. With them, cost control is built in: request deduplication, caching within provider terms, daily and monthly quotas, usage logging and an admin usage screen.

What Leap does not do

  • It does not provide turn-by-turn navigation — it hands off to Google Maps.
  • It does not guarantee you will make a train. It computes a recommended leave time from the buffers you set.
  • Travel estimates are only as current as the last successful route lookup; stale data is labeled, not hidden.
  • It does not require, or create, a cloud account. There is nothing to sign up for to view your own itinerary.

The itinerary, phrasebook, currency converter and leave-time engine cost nothing per use. The allowance covers live interpreting, which is the only part with a real per-minute cost.

Your trip stays yours.

Leap is local-first by design: the itinerary lives on your device, family sync runs through your own home server over Tailscale rather than our infrastructure, and export is encrypted with AES-GCM under a passphrase you choose. We don't make privacy claims beyond what the app implements.

Leap is in beta. Pricing above is planned and not yet live. Travel times are estimates derived from the buffers you configure and the routing data available at the time; Leap does not guarantee arrival times or connections.
